A brief history of the cemetery: The Morristown Cemetery was started in the early 1870's when The Morristown Cemetery Company was founded. (A.V. Wilson and Joseph Brown were among those involved in the project.) The cemetery was laid out, and a neighboring land owner, James Carriger allowed the company a right of way through his property from Cumberland Street to the cemetery. He later sold his property, and it became the Morristown College. However, Hamblen County had just been formed and the State of Tennessee seems to have ruled the cemetery company's charter invalid. The cemetery continued until 1884 when the mayor of Morristown, William McFarland, and several leading townspeople (William Van Huss, Harvey Loop, J. K. Lawless, J. A. Townsend, Dr. Michael Carriger, and his son W. P. Carriger) formed a new company, legally chartered, and having the same name (Morristown Cemetery Company), which then owned the cemetery. Several deeds are on file at the courthouse showing this company as the seller of grave lots at the cemetery. Around 1906 a new cemetery company was formed by a Mr. Galbraith and Mr. Rowe which began operating a cemetery directly behind the Morristown Cemetery and equal in size to it. They got a right of way through the old cemetery from the Morristown Cemetery Company, which is on file at the courthouse. Then as time passed, the builders of Morristown after the Civil War gradually died off and were buried at the one of the two cemeteries. Both became neglected. Both were now considered as one cemetery. Efforts over the years to restore it tended to fail. Today the cemetery is under the well meaning care of the Morristown Cemetery Restoration Committee. In the last few years much senseless damage has been done to the historic site.
